About Ruby King Bakery Café
Ruby King Bakery has served Oakland since 2002, offering traditional Guangzhou and Hong Kong-style baked goods made fresh daily. With roots in the food industry dating back to 1972, we’re known for our egg tarts, curry beef puffs, baked chicken pies, and simple, handmade cakes for birthdays, holidays, and special occasions. Nothing here is ever sold overnight - everything is baked fresh each morning by hand. Now being passed down to a longtime apprentice, Ah-Hua, who shares our commitment to preserving tradition and flavor. Ruby King is one of the few bakeries still offering authentic Chinese pastries made the old-fashioned way.

I dropped in for a morning audit of Ruby King Bakery and easily found free parking around the corner toward the freeway. The energy inside was vibrant, with a lot of people hanging out in the cafe enjoying fresh pastries. They have a beautiful, incredibly nice display of goods for sale in their front glass cases that instantly shows the depth of their traditional Cantonese baking. I thoroughly enjoyed everything that I purchased, but my absolute favorite was the Coconut Tart. The interior crumb structure has a perfect sweetness and a dense, authentically rich coconut flake texture. I also highly recommend the Mini Melon Cake (their traditional Wife Cake / lo por boon) which features flawless, flaky pastry lamination peeling back over a chewy wintermelon-sesame filling. To round out the triad, the cross-section of the Bird's Nest cake slice reveals an impressive, lightweight structural execution. Rather than a standard singular base, it features a traditional Chinese chiffon sponge built with two distinct layers of cream running through the middle. The light, airy sponge aeration beautifully anchors the stabilized cream layers, perfectly balancing out the thick, glossy red glazed

As an Oakland native, this is the best (and cheapest) egg tarts you can find PERIOD. They’ve never changed since I was a kid and the prices…it’s $1.75 as of 2026. The pastry selection is the same, the recipes, the grandpas drinking dollar coffees. Although it’s not as popular as the Napoleon bakery right next to it, the real ones know they have better egg tarts. It’s really part of the Oakland Chinatown history!

Best traditional Hong Kong style pastry here in Oakland Chinatown! Their Lotus Seed with Thousand Years Old Duck Egg 皮疍酥 is divine! Everything is delicious and in very reasonable prices! Service was fast and friendly! Seating tables are mostly occupied by senior uncles which make it almost impossible to sit down to have a coffee and enjoy the delicious pastry!

The bread is so delicious and affordable. It’s very hard to find a traditional Hong Kong style bakery like this. It’s a family owned business with very nice staff. I got the egg tart, baked chicken pie, and curry beef puff. I would come here again for sure.

I had a delightful assortment of treats from Ruby King Bakery Café, including a dozen egg tarts, 6 curry beef puffs, and an 8-inch Mixed Fruit birthday cake, all totaling around $55. The standout feature of this bakery is undoubtedly their superbly crafted, flaky pastries. The real star of the show was the Mixed Fruit birthday cake. If you find traditional store-bought birthday cakes overly sweet, Ruby King Bakery Café offers a perfect alternative. The sponge of the cake was exceptionally soft, and the overall sweetness was just right—not overpowering. The combination of great value and high quality makes Ruby King Bakery Café a must-visit for pastry enthusiasts. I highly recommend it, especially if you prefer a more balanced and less sugary birthday cake experience. *Tip: I placed a phone call to order the birthday cake two days in advance, though it seems they also have ready-to-go birthday cakes available in-store.
